Captain: Josh Newby.
Last season we played Mellish and lost 10 tries to 3. But that was in the past, when we were on the “Dark Side!”. Well we came in from the cold!!! And times were a changing!.
Team included: Henry Hartley (9, Wing), Jay Scott (8, Wing), Zac Walker (7, Outside centre), Louis Beastall (6, Inside centre), Mathew Moore (5, Fly half), Henry Slawson (4, Scrum Half), Westley Smith (3 Tight head prop), James Carr (2, Hooker) and last but by no means least Joshua Newby (1, loose Head prop and captain). Super Sub: Lucy Paine (10)
Mellish fielded a combined under 9’s and under 10’s team.
Ok, here we go:
From the start, Ashfield’s positional play was sensational, lots of talking and lots of discussion, regarding where certain players should be, this was great dialogue amongst the players.
The main focus was on tackling, running into the opposition and off loading the ball. In addition to using the shoulder to rip the ball from the Mellish attackers to turn a defence into an attack. Well, the boys and Lucy Paine, did NOT let us down.
They were like rampaging “wilder-beasts”, hunting in pairs, knocking back everything that came their way.
Joshua must have stole “umpteen”, balls, off loaded and passed down the backs for the wingers to score. This was “perfick” rugby at it’s best.
Lewis, head down finding the gaps and making significant ground, helped Ashfield build on firm foundations.
Westley when ball in hand made a massive impact on the game, attacking and playing like a seasoned professional.
Zac, like a whippet dashing back and fore, given the space Linford Christie would find it difficult to catch him. But not only pace has this little “Jedi warrior”, but the ability to look at the game and place himself in a position that would best attack their defence.
Mathew and Henry, two relatively new players to the under 10’s, created a superb partnership in scrum half and fly half. These two positions are pivotal in any game. They showed good knowledge and read the game well.
Listening to Mathew organising his backs was a pleasure to hear, even introducing a loop move, without any input from the very excited referee. “It nearly brought a tear to my eye”!.
First game of the season, what a fantastic start. Both Alan and myself, are so proud of the team. They “over-delivered”.
I must mentioning our super substitution. Joshua received a nasty bang and took a break, giving our super sub “Lucy Paine” an opportunity to make her mark. And oh my word did she make her mark. Within about 2 mins of collecting the ball she broke 3 tackles and scored in the corner. She was so delighted and excited when offering my hand she nearly knocked me over. She played a stormer. Well done Lucy.
