Newark U15's 5 : 0 Ashfield U15's
.
26th October 2008
A weakened Ashfield squad put in a brave & hard working display to nearly overcome their more illustrious rivals. Depleted by illness, injury & mid term holidays, they were grateful to 4 of the under 14’s who made up a squad of 16. This ultimately made the difference, as Newark were able to call on fresh legs in the last quarter. The two squads were inseparable in the first half with Ashfield’s Jake Elliott probably going closest to scoring, after a typical scrum half run from the Newark 22m line.
The second half saw no let up in intensity and while Ashfield’s legs started to suffer, their hearts didn’t and the whole squad tackled themselves to a standstill. A special mention must go out here to Man of the Match, full back David Beecham for some great try saving tackles. Sadly the game was decided by a disputed try when Newark, after a sustained period of play went over, but appeared to drop the ball in the act of scoring. Ashfield tried manfully to get back after the setback, but Newark’s fresher legs saw them through, as they closed the game off in the last 10 minutes.
Ashfield are looking forward to the return and one would think that Newark will be a little bit more nervous than in past encounters.
