Captain: Lucy Payne.
This was the first competitive, full contact, game of rugby that most of the Under 9’s had played and was the first time they had played together but boy did they do well
Team included: Laura Elliott (9,Wing), Keeleigh Daykin (8, Wing), Zac Walker (7, Outside centre), Cellan Shacklock (6, Inside centre), Lewis Beastall (5, Fly half), Callum Close (4, Scrum Half), Lucy Payne (3 Tight head prop and captain), Kai Poxon (2, Hooker) and Kyle Allan (1, loose Head prop).
Mellish fielded a combined U9’s and U10’s team.
After being tenderised by the Ashfield U10’s it was the turn of the U9’s.
Our pre-match team talk focussed mainly on the importance of tackling. Well done to you all as you were obviously listening. There were some good hard tackles going in by the whole team but particular mention must go to Lewis Beastall , who every time I saw him, was on his way to the floor with a Mellish player firmly in his grasp. Well done Lewis.
There were a couple of grins from the opposition when they saw we had three young ladies on the team but they were soon wiped off and Lucy rubbed salt in as she again used her strength and speed to power through and score. Mess with these three at your peril!!
Kai Poxon did a great job throwing into the line-out and has already worked out a code with the two props. He also just missed out on scoring a try himself when his foot just strayed into touch.
There was also some great ripping work done to steal the ball by Lucy Payne, Kyle Allan and Callum Close and the off-loading was at times a joy to watch. Good communication between the scrum half and fly half meant that Cellan Shacklock and Zac Walker could explode into action and they bagged two tries each.
The whole team should be just as proud of themselves as Paul and I are of them.
This bodes well for a great season.
